This afternoon, I finally stamped down 5000 words of the rough draft for my current manuscript, Starlight Flame. I found out that most of the first 5,000 was about laying the groundwork for the rules of the magic system and the geography and culture of the races. Basically, I did a lot of world building and I still have a few more thousand before the world building takes a side seat to the story and action.
As it stands, I find it a fun challenge to world build in creative ways that don’t take away from the conflict. Conflict, as I see it, is the aspect of storytelling that keeps the reader interested. A book with no conflict is a textbook.
I plan to do a status update every 5,000 words and jot down the experiences I have in hammering down the words.
